In the early 1960's, KUKA redesigned their system again and made the truck capable of collecting bulky refuse. With this, new type the 215 was born. This new truck could handle almost every type of garbage at that time. It was a real revolution, and within a few years, KUKA became to be the biggest garbage truck builder in Europe. The Type 215 remained in production until 1977.

1960 prototype of what would become the Type 215

A Type 215 Demonstrator with rear charging door opened

At left, view of the hopper, and at right showing charge door removed for bulk loading

The unassuming-looking 215 would eat a surprising diet of heavy refuse

Even large objects are quickly broken down and swallowed into the rotary drum

Assembly line workers prepare a vehicle chassis...

...then mount the drum...

...then the tailgate is fitted...

...and framework is built for the body panels.

At the opposite end of the scale were these smaller versions, a 1962 Type 210 at left, and a 1969 Type 215 on the right
