'W' TYPE FORE & AFT TIPPER

The 'W' type chassis of 1947 was far more conventional than the Freighter it superseded. But the vehicle continued the company tradition of robust design, and quality of production. The Fore & Aft tipping body was introduced in 1951, and received an enthusiastic response from customers, with its ability to compact the refuse using gravity. The rear hopper of the vehicle could be modified for bulk loading of containers. Business premises and blocks of flats were using containers on an increasing scale. The Fore & Aft tipper, when tipping forwards, could discharge a container's load into the body. From 1957, a Power-Press option was offered. A hydraulically-operated pressure plate in the body roof swung down as the body was tipped forward, providing additional compaction.
