Magirus-Deutz bucket loader circa 1953

Truck manufacturer Magirus-Deutz fitted many refuse bodies to their chassis during the 1950s, including Streicher, KUKA and Haller, as well as rear loader of their own design starting around 1951. The Magirus-Deutz rear loader featured a hinged bucket, covered with sheetmetal bodywork for dust control. The bucket was periodically rotated inward by a hydraulic cylinder and linkage, which dumped its contents within the main body. An internal hinged partition door kept the refuse within the body from falling back under the bucket, and this door swing open as the tailgate was raised and the body was tipped to unload the contents.

Improved versions were introduced in the late 1950s, using a packer plate to clean the hopper, much like the Heil Colectomatic. These later "M-series" bodies are believed to have been made with the co-operation of Haller, since the later versions came to be sold under the Haller name. The M-series bodies are documented in the Haller album here at Classic Refuse Trucks.

Another version of the MD bucket loader, which had a cable-raised tailgate

Note the fans located above the hopper, most likely for dust control

AS body is raised, fixed cables draw open the tailgate

Front view of tailgate cables

Note the rear partition door is swung open to allow discharge of the load

Yet another version from Magirus-Deutz, with a restyled tailgate canopy and bodywork

Side view showing cables above roof of body

Driver-side view

This version has a single-stage hoist, and the tailgate partition appears to be fixed

This version may have had changes to the bucket lifting mechanism
