Powell Duffryn Engineering Ltd.
Cardiff, Wales

Beginning in the early 1960s, Powell Duffryn Engineering began manufacture of the Dempster equipment line for the United Kingdom. Initially, the Dumpmaster front loader, LFW hoist and Dinosaur roll-off were built in their factory at Maindy, Cardiff. The model 30 DB compaction bulk trailer was unique to the PDE lineup, and was basically a 30 yard Dumpmaster body without lift arms. These were typically mounted on rigid 8-wheelers for use as transfer trailers. Large cities, such as London, would use fleets of smaller trucks on rounds, which would then transfer their loads to bulkers at a centralized location. Dempster's rugged compaction/ejection body was ideally suited to this duty.

PDE helped introduce the American front loader to Great Britain, spearheading Dempster's overseas presence during their long relationship. By the early 1980s, Dempster's parent company had bought Shelvoke & Drewry, and begun consolidation under the new Shelvoke-Dempster banner.

Dumpmaster 30 DB "bulker" was unique to the UK, and made an excellent transfer truck

Like US models, telescopic packer cylinder was mounted at low angle to reduce jamming and stress on panel

Also like the US version, extensions on packer panel hold door open a few feet, allowing for clean ejection

POWELL DUFFRYN PACKSLAVE REAR LOADER

The image above was found by Giorgios Kollias in Greece. The ad was published in a Greek trade journal in September of 1970, depicting the Packslave, a revolving rake-type rear loader sold by Powell Duffryn Engineering. It is believed to be a licensed version of the French SEMAT Superpac for the Greek market. PDE has used the Packslave trade name on other products in the U.K., but this model would not have been available in the home country since SEMAT already had a relationship with Shelvoke & Drewry, which manufactured and sold this design as the Revopak.

Further supporting this theory is a picture of an unusual SEMAT Superpac with a "fine tooth" rake (shown below), which bears a striking resemblance to the Greek PDE model.

Following their acquisition of Geesink, PDE marketed the GPM rear loader in the UK as the "Vulture" (1984 ad)
