1963 LEACH 2R Packmaster
Although last month's selection was also from Leach, this outstanding truck was just too good to pass up. This is the early 2R Packmaster before ejection dumping was added, which has the fully enclosed, hoist-dumped body. This twenty-five cubic yard version on a heavy-duty Diamond T truck chassis was part of a fleet delivered to the Division of Sanitation, Newark, New Jersey. It represented the most powerful, highest capacity refuse trucks on earth at the time: The 2R could pack up to 1000 pounds per cubic yard and crush small automobiles. The lack of ejection discharge combined with the massive payload and heavy weight made these behemoths treacherous to unload on unstable tips, but the addition of the Leach "Push Out" system in 1963 cemented the 2R Packmaster's position as the ultimate refuse truck, and it remained without serious rival for many years to come.
