1955 Heil Colectomatic
The Colectomatic was not the first Heil refuse packer, but was the first truly modern design to emerge from their Milwaukee plant after the war. To say it was a success is an understatement, as it was to remain in production for thirty years, and the hinged-hopper type packing mechanism has been sold or imitated around the world. Part of a fleet owned by South Euclid Ohio, it rests upon a White 3000 tilt-cab series, one of the workhorse trucks of the 1950's. Though this early version of the Colectomatic was a hoist-dump unit, the revised version that would follow in 1960 would be the first commercially successful rear loader with telescopic ejection.
