1973 Gulf MBR "Cherry Picker I"
The Mechanical Bag Retriever, or MBR, combined existing equipment technology of the day, custom engineered for automated refuse collection. This is the first of two versions built, and consists of an E-Z Pack side loader (modified to accept refuse via a passageway in the packer plate) being fed by a conveyor belt. A grapple boom arm with patented pick-up claw was able to reach over most obstacles blocking its path. Truck chassis is a modified International Cargostar cabover. Sold through the Gulf Oil Corporation of Houston, Texas, it was designed to be used with plastic refuse sacks which were relatively new in the early 1970's. Who did the conversion and assembly of these short-lived trucks is not known.
