1956 Gar Wood LP-200
The Load-Packer 200 series was the premium model at Gar Wood during most of the 1950's, continuing the basic design launched in 1938. This truck worked for the village of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, on the western shore of Lake Michigan, and sat atop a high-riding Ford cabover. Like all Gar Wood packers of the era, this was a hoist-dumped body. Note the collector loading a 55 gallon steel barrel through the side door, a procedure sometimes used on packer trucks in the days before ejection unloading devices. Most contractors and municipalities have discouraged the use of such barrels for years due to the strain caused to the men having to lift them. It was truly a different era.
See the Gar Wood album for more details on the 200 series and other Gar Wood models.
