1973 Loadmaster LM-320

Pictured this month is a somewhat unusual combination of equipment on a refuse truck, which once worked the streets of Dade County (Miami) Florida circa 1973. This mid-range Loadmaster LM-320 is equipped with twin cart lifters for the USS Roll-a Waste system, one of the first of many semi-automated designs of the type that are nearly universal on rear loaders of today. Contrasted with modern "tuck-away" lifters, these look cumbersome and must have been a nuisance to the collectors during manual loading. Also, the LM-320 with its two cubic yard hopper was somewhat cramped for this application, and the contents of even a single 80 gallon cart could often fill it enough to necessitate operation of the packer. Finally, a venerable Ford N-Series LCF provides the power, a truck not commonly seen in refuse service, and sporting an even rarer full crew cab.
