AUGUST, 2005 UPDATE

CRT FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Since there was no July update, I have decided to post a little early for August.

July 30, 2004, is the official birth date of Classic Refuse Trucks online. I had actually started CRT that May as a personal page on Ebay, which consisted of little more than a Truck of the Month selection (a 1972 Gar Wood LP900 was the first) and a few lines of text. By July, I had started the site on MSN, with a few photo albums and the Refuse Truck Logos feature. By September, CRT had officially moved here to the worldwide web, thanks to Bill Wood and his Tau.com servers. The MSN page, now known as the Members Area, remains as an auxiliary bulletin board and photo gallery.

I am very happy with favorable response the site has received over the last year. Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect in recent months has been the growth of the Members Area, and the participation of so many of you in that part of CRT. The Members Area photo collection is approaching 500 images, spanning the globe, and almost all of them are unique to the web. I would like to thank all of you who have contributed these images and other information. I can think of no other single source for that many refuse truck photos anywhere on the web !

The newest addition to the CRT family, the Video Library at Yahoo, finally has some material posted courtesy of one of our members. Martin (gloomshadow82) has uploaded video of one of his outstanding Lego replicas for everyone to see in action. Photos of his creations have been favorites in the Members Photo Gallery, and now you can see it actually working. Personally, I hope to post some more video in the future, but members are welcome to post refuse truck related video here at any time.

There have been some problems reported accessing video from this site, and any persistent problems should be reported directly to Yahoo. There is very little I can do technically to help in these matters. One known quirk with Yahoo is that they have had a limit on how much you can view/download per day (think it is 20MB), at which point you will be cut off from downloads for that day. I don't know the reason for this policy, and unless a better alternative to Yahoo comes along, we will have to bear with them.

TRUCK RESCUE: GAR WOOD 700 SERIES LOAD-PACKER

I received these pictures from Bryan Frymire, of a Gar Wood Load-Packer LP-720 (body only, the truck is not for sale) that is available in the Louisville, Kentucky area. Bryan writes:

I know where there is a complete and recently (three years ago) working Gar Wood industries LP720 compactor body. The present owner acquired it with a Mack MB440 and plans on using parts from the Mack for his current fleet of trucks. He has no use for the compactor and plans to scrap it unless a buyer is found. As I said, this body is complete and in very good shape. All hydraulics and electrical are in place and it looks as if with a good clean-up and troubleshoot session it could work again. Surface rust only with some perforation of the floor near a frame rail. I would guess that if a buyer presented the currrent owner with something in the neighborhood of several hundred to a thousand bucks that a deal could be made. There are torches and a crane where the truck is for loading onto a hauler's truck.

Vintage equipment is a high priority at CRT, and I am providing this information in the hope that a classic packer might be preserved. However, I have not seen the unit, can personally make no claims or guarantees about its condition, and am not involved in any way with this sale. Anyone seriously interested should contact CRT, and I will forward your inquiry directly to Bryan.

The 700 series, with their rotary packer blades were made between 1965-72 and are the third generation of the original "Cyclomatic" design that first appeared in 1957. Once a staple of the American refuse industry, these are fast disappearing to the scrap yards, which is where this one will go if a buyer is not found by October, 2005.

For more historical information, see the Gar Wood Photo Album here at CRT.

YOUR PRIVACY AT CRT
Although there have not been any problems, I would like to let everyone know my policy regarding privacy. Members are not required to divulge any personal information, including their e-mail and home address. Even when it is known to CRT, it will not be posted or dispersed to anyone without your prior consent.

However, if you send me your name in correspondence, or post it on the web sites, I will consider this permission to mention your name and possibly your city and country here at CRT (for example, here in the News Update), unless you specifically advise me otherwise, by including such notice in your correspondence.

If your name currently appears on CRT and you would like it removed, please contact me at any time and I will do so immediately.

Thanks again to all of you for your support, photos, information and enthusiasm for vintage refuse trucks during this past year. I will continue to update this site as time permits. Thanks to you, we may all look forward to another great year at CRT !
