NOVEMBER, 2004 UPDATE

This month be sure to check out the new Sicard album , with new illustrations and photos as well as a short history of these often forgotten classic refuse trucks. Sicard Sanivan refuse trucks pioneered the use of ejection unloading in rear loaders using a somewhat unusual method. I would like to sincerely thank Joan Wells of Sicard, division of SMI-Snowblast, who supplied information used in the article. It has been almost fifty years since Sicard made refuse truck bodies, so it was a pleasant surprise to receive such a rapid and helpful response. Thanks Joan !

Walter Lewellen from Florida wrote and suggested a Lodal album, and rest assured I will try to get one assembled as soon as possible. I also have obtained some better images of the early Dempster Dumpmaster and will try to update that file next month as well. Meanwhile, I have featured a Lodal Load-a-Matic front loader on the main page (CRT Home) as the truck of the month for November.

Last month featured a revised Gar Wood album, including a page an the LP-300 series. The 300 was essentially the same as the LP-200, except an auxiliary compression panel was added to the upper part of the tailgate. Unfortunately, no photo of this rare model was available at the time the article was posted. Nick Haflinger of California sent a very informative e-mail, which noted that the model LP-300 did indeed have a slightly larger rear cover, easily discernible from its sister LP-200. Then, just in time for this month's update, I have finally obtained a photo of an LP-300 which illustrates this fact:

This beautiful example on a tandem-axle chassis was part of Detroit's huge fleet of Load-Packers in 1956, and was equipped with an aftermarket auto-lubrication system that greased the truck every 45 minutes it was in operation. I will update the LP-300 album page soon to reflect this new information.

By the way, Nick and Brian Carpenter have authored a series of articles on the history of refuse collection vehicles, which can be seen at Brian's Unofficial Shelvoke & Drewry Site. The series appears inside the newsletter section of that web site.

That looks like all for this month. Thanks for stopping by, and as always if you have a question or comment, feel free to contact CRT.
