Classification: Escalator Loader Body
LOADING: CONTINUOUS

A self-loading refuse body unit, with powered means to elevate refuse from street level to inside the body by way of a continuous loop rotating conveyor. Conveyor may be open, or partially enclosed, and mounted at the front, rear, or side of the receiving body. Escalator may consist of roller chains connected by lifting flights, flexible belt or a rotating wheel. The body may or may not feature means for compaction of load by an auxiliary compression plate.

Stationary escalators (or conveyors) had been commonly used throughout mining and manufacturing operations for years when John Kelly of Boston, Massachusetts patented his refuse truck in 1909, but it is not known if he ever actually built his design. The first escalator-loader refuse truck known to have been built was from Automatic Truck Loader Co. in 1931. Later, it was popularized by The Heil Company and the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) during the late 1930s.
