Trash Mobile
Sanitary Disposal Company
Knoxville, Tennessee
The Trash Mobile was one of the first nationally-marketed satellite collection vehicles, designed to unload into the hopper of a rear load packer truck. Based on the popular International Harvester Scout utility vehicle, it carried a 1-1/2 cubic yard dump body. This was comparable with that of the competitive Cushman Truckster, which was based on a much lighter scooter platform. The Scout chassis also made available the option of four-wheel drive for off-highway or snowy conditions.
The single hydraulic lift ram was driven by an electric pump, powered by the vehicle battery, eliminating the need for a conventional power take-off. Trash Mobile was originally developed by Sanitary Disposal Company, a refuse hauler which built them for use on their own routes. Beginning in 1968, it was advertised nationally. By 1971, a satellite vehicle of the same name was listed as a division of "Hanna" of Portland, Oregon.
